Architectural historian David Gebhard, in his Guide to Architecture in San Francisco and Northern California, lists The Matador as one of ten most significant buildings in Chico.

Between 1944 and 1953, the Glumac family designed the Matador in their interpretation of the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style and had it built by local craftsmen. Ornamental tiles from the Gladding, McBean and Co ceramic plant in Lincoln decorate the exteriors and interiors, including the showers. > More info on Gladding, McBean
