ChiVAA, Inc. Mission Statement:

 ChiVAA exists for the purpose of fostering an environment in which artists and visual arts stakeholders may flourish in order to enhance the cultural and economic well-being of the larger community. ChiVAA is an umbrella organization that links arts organizations and individual artists, enabling them to have a united voice and presence in Chico.

Aug 14 – Sep 11 The Artistry Gallery Reflections on Summer’s Bounty Showcasing work by painter Gitta Brewster and glass artist David Smallhouse. Brewster, who is inspired by the color and shape of the produce she paints, also loves their irregularity and imperfections. Smallhouse begins his fourth decade of blown glass artistry with new shapes and designs all the while maintaining his technical excellence and fresh creativity. His work encompasses vibrant colors and strong organic shapes.

Aug 23 – Sep 24 Turner Print Museum Transcendence: Enlightening Spirit in Prints. Guest curators explore religious iconography and the spiritual power revealed in the process of making art. Curator’s talk and reception on Thu, Sep 9 at 5:30 pm.

Aug 24 – Sep 19 University Art Gallery Illiterature is a group exhibition with artists from throughout the US. Curated by Mark Carter, each participating artist engages in some way with language, verbal coding and notation. The artworks combine text and text-like imagery to create works that are visual, graphic, illustrative and contemplative in approach and presentation.

Aug 27 – Sep 25 Avenue 9 Gallery Found in Translation featuring the paintings of Valerie Payne and porcelain by Chris Yates.

Aug 28 – Sep 19 Chico Art Center MFA@CAC  An exhibition of artworks by the Master of Fine Arts candidates and recent graduates from CSU, Chico, revealing to the community what is transpiring among the graduate students working within the art department at Chico State. Students work with world events, social issues, personal, and impersonal intent within their art.

Aug 28 - Sep 28   Sally Dimas Art Gallery What is “the zone” and how does an artist reach it? Come and view Reaching For The Zone for insights into artistic thought processes. Reception with the artists on Fri, Sep 10 from 4 to 8 pm.

Sep 1 – Sep 30 Humanities Center Gallery Karen Westheimer Dogs I Have Known…And A Few Stray Cats. Westheimer has enjoyed illustrating many subjects in many mediums, her current favorite pairing is dogs in water colors, whimsically portrayed in this exhibition…along with a few strays, feline and otherwise. Sep 1 reception from 5 to 7 pm.

Sep 1 – Sep 30 Humanities Center Gallery Jean Gallagher Balance Gallagher is interested in haoris (a unisex kimono-like jacket) as a metaphor for equality between men and women, as well as figurative work mixed with symbolic textile imagery to investigate human relations between genders. Sep 1 reception from 5 to 7 pm.

Sep 3 – Sep 25 Work by Dave Simcox is featured at the Orland Art Center - 732 Fourth Street in Orland. Pen and ink drawings with washes of ink and watercolor, and his hand-colored linocuts, are inspired by the arts and crafts movement and the wonder of local agriculture. Orland Art Center is open Tue through Sat from 3 to 7 pm. Reception for the artist on Sep 3.


 

Sep 9 – Oct 30 James Snidle Fine Arts David Hoppe and Stan Sours Two wildly original artists exhibit their latest works: David Hoppe’s acrylics and prints, and Stan Sours’ brightly colored wooden sculptures and salt glaze ceramic art figures. Opening reception on Sep 9 from 5 to 8 pm.

Sep 9 – Sep 24 1078 Gallery Sandi Escobar Lobby Show Escobar is a child of split language—English+Spanish=Espanglish—divided between traditional, contemporary, and popular cultures. She is a product of family history and present environment. It is this split strand to which she connects her own experience with language and culture. Though we do not all speak the same language, we can empathize, recognizing our common structure. Reception Sep 11, from 3 to 5 pm.

Sep 18 - Nov 6 The Artistry House Show… See what they’re up to at 830 Broadway when they showcase work by their resident artists including: Janice Hofmann, Delbert Rupp, Bree Schmidt, Sherri Fizer, Bethany Pinegar, and Cory Condry.
Reception on Sat, Sep 18, from 5 to 8 pm.

Sep 29 – Nov 9 University Art Gallery Wayne Thiebaud: Works on Paper. An exhibition of works by Thiebaud, who is best known for his iconic still lifes of all-American foods and products, such as cakes, pies, sandwiches, cosmetics and toys. He is considered by many art historians and scholars to be one of California’s greatest living artists.

Oct Three Sixty Ecotique The latest in jewelry, perfume, and clothing design from local artisans.

Oct 2 - Chico Paper Company introduces Cynthia Schildhauer’s Chico Alphabet series. This new series consists of 26 original mixed-media encaustic paintings, playing with the notion of the alphabet and life in Chico. Her intention is to portray life’s stunning contradictions in the most authentic and beautiful way she can. Come to celebrate with Cynthia at the opening event from 5 to 8 pm.

Oct 2 - 3 and Oct 9 - 10 Avenue 9 Gallery Open from 10 am to 5 pm for the Open Studios Art Tour. Avenue 9 is a special place to visit during the Tour to see guild artists at work and enjoy musical performances of David Mallory’s beginning and advanced students. Call for specific demo and performance times.

Oct 2 - 3 and Oct 9 - 10 Sally Dimas Art Gallery Demonstrations of pastel painting given by Sally Dimas throughout the Open Studios Art Tour. 10 am to 5 pm.

Oct 5 – Oct 28 Humanities Center Gallery Space Race: An Art Project by Jonathan Keats Oct 4 reception from 5 to 7 pm.

Oct 5 – Oct 28 Humanities Center Gallery Expand to Five Times its Size Rodolfo Salgado Jr. A current MFA candidate, Salgado’s work explores the magic that happens within our bodies—disgusting, beautiful, tactile, fun, and at times lugubrious.

Oct 5 – Oct 29 Turner Print Museum Impressions: Rubbing. View rubbings from Indonesia and China and make your own! Curator’s talk and reception on Thu, Oct 7 at 5:30 pm.

Oct 6 – Oct 16 1078 Gallery Butte County Water Color Society sponsors its annual all water media exhibition, juried this year by Dr. Dolores Mitchell. Reception Oct 8 from 6 to 9 pm.

Oct 8 - Chico Paper Company CSUC Alumni Benefit Series by Jake Early. Join in the excitement of the opening celebration of “The Chico Experience.” Jake Early will be present from 5 to 8 pm to unveil the first of a 5-piece hand-pulled serigraph collection to benefit the Chico Alumni Association. Every piece in the series is rich in Chico imagery and will be offered as a limited edition of only 100 pieces, so come early for Early!

Oct 14 – Oct 27 Enloe Regional Cancer Center Healing Art Gallery - Lilly Oncology on Canvas Special Exhibition. A biennial art competition that provides those affected by cancer an opportunity to express the life-affirming changes that give that journey meaning.


 

Oct 15 – Oct 30 Avenue 9 Gallery The Zen of Michele Miller: Photos from Here and There. A unique opportunity to see the range of photographer Michele Miller’s work, from the mundane to the exotic. Meet the artist at an Oct 15 reception from 5 to 8 pm.

Libo Li

Oct 21 - Nov 13 1078 Gallery Libo Li and Megan Moore. Li and Moore were among the top winners in the 1078 Gallery’s 2010 International Juried MFA Exhibition. Li makes replicas of ceramic objects found in classical paintings and pictures from all countries and all times in history. By reproducing the ceramic objects in three-dimensional form, she intends to show the aesthetic conflicts of different periods and cultures. Aesthetics also motivates Moore. Balance, texture, harmony, and pattern are the tools she uses to explore the intangible relationships that add up to the beautiful. Reception Fri, Oct 22 from 6 to 8 pm.

Oct 23 and Oct 24 Avenue 9 Gallery Special memorial exhibition of the artistic legacy of physician and quilter, Eva Henneberry, who died in January. Accompanying this event, the legacy of another Chico artist and teacher, Janet Turner, will be celebrated by a special sale to benefit the Turner Print Museum. Special hours: Sat 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday Noon to 4 pm.

Oct 22 – Nov 19 Sally Dimas Art Gallery Frost Interrupted. How would California artists interpret that statement? See this amazing show and meet the artists on Fri, Oct 22 from 4 to 8 pm.

Nov 5 – Dec 4 Avenue 9 Gallery Umbrian Corridors, Continued. Ann Pierce’s watermedia show of works inspired by her recent trip to Italy. Celebrate the show opening on Nov 5 from 5 to 8 pm.

Nov 6 – Nov 28 Chico Art Center Small World, Small Works Designed as an opportunity for local artists to show their work with other artists from around the nation and the world—bringing artists from all parts of the world together under one roof for our visitors to enjoy.

Nov 8 – Dec 14 Turner Print Museum After Ukiyo-e: Modern Japanese Prints. Enjoy the prints of modern Japanese artists as well as those of historic Ukiyo-e artists. Curator’s talk and reception on Thu, Nov 18 at 5:30 pm.

Oct 6 University Art Gallery presents The Art and Life of Wayne Thiebaud, a lecture by Phil Linhares, Chief Curator of the Oakland Museum of California. Linhares will discuss Thiebaud’s career from his early days to the present and will chronicle his art and life, illustrated by examples of Thiebaud’s signature still lifes, portraits, landscapes and drawings. Oct 7 Chico Art Center Talk Art An evening of artist talks featuring five local artists using different mediums for creative expression. Show and share from 7:30 to 9 pm.

Oct 14 Enloe Regional Cancer Center Healing Art Gallery: Think Pink Celebrating the work of cancer survivors Gary Quiring, Ann T. Pierce and the Lilly Oncology on Canvas exhibition. Refreshments and live music from 4:30 to 6 pm.

Oct 15 AicoraGems Jewelry Box Lapidary Art Demonstration. Ron Pickard will demonstrate his lapidary arts skill by cutting October’s birthstone, the opal. Reception and demonstration from 7 to 9 pm.

Oct 22 AicoraGems Jewelry Box Gallery Jewelry Making Demonstration. Observe goldsmith Brenda Schlegel as she takes a 2-dimensional medium and transforms it into 3-dimensional precious metal jewelry. Reception and demonstration from 7 to 9 pm.

Oct 23 University Art Gallery Benefit Silent and Live Auction! The silent auction features Wayne Thiebaud-related items, including free admission and a guided tour for two at the newly renovated Crocker Museum in Sacramento. EDUCATION

Learn to paint with Darice Machel Mcguire, accomplished artist in oil and acrylic painting with over 30 years experience. Group and private lessons for children, teens and adults. For more info, go to www.art-e-studio.net.

Chico Art Center – Fall classes begin in September with 6- and 8-week sessions and special weekend workshops for both children and adults. The schedule includes painting classes in acrylics, oil, watercolor, and still life; figure drawing; basic art techniques using a variety of mediums; papier mache; pottery on the wheel and raku firing techniques; cartooning and animation; and using recyclables to make art. A special collaboration with String Bead will allow you to explore glass fusing, slumping, and making dichroic glass jewelry. The Artistry Juried Fine Art Jewelry Show. The Artistry will display jewelry in a way that has never been done in Chico… equivalent to fine art. This show will take place in November and December of 2010. For a prospectus, contact the gallery at 894-5227.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

 

Doug Rathbun is going to Berlin (August 25 to October 25) to prepare and mount an exhibition at the Dada Post (Dadapost.com or plain Dadapost on Facebook) of his wonderful found-art wildlife—and we do mean wild! Some of his pieces can still be seen at Avenue 9 Gallery while he’s gone. His ENORMOUS (18-foot) hammerhead shark was recently installed at the new Tackle Box Bar & Grill on Park Avenue. Come and take a look. Bon voyage, Doug, and auf wiedersehen!
